Foreclosure Consultants Must Now Register
by Debra M.
On June 1, California Attorney General Jerry Brown issued a directive mandating that foreclosure consultants register with his office and post a $100,000 bond no later than July 1, 2009. Failure to do so will result in imprisonment and/or a fine.
This action was prompted by an increase in consumer complaints regarding foreclosure consulting scams that resulted in homeowners being bilked out of their homes and cash by so-called "rescuers" who were actually predators.
Those who successfully register with the AG's office will receive a certificate stating they have complied with the rule.
For more information on the registration process, as well as tips for homeowners facing tough mortgage decisions, visit the Attorney General's website.

North County Paralegals Celebrate "Paralegal Day"
by Cheryl W
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed June 27, 2009, "California Paralegal Day" to acknowledge the contributions paralegals have made to the legal community.
The North County section of the San Diego Paralegal Association (SDPA) celebrated this special day on June 11th. Association members enjoyed a catered affair held on the patio of the North County Branch of the San Diego County Public Law Library (SDCPLL).
Guest speaker, the Honorable Anthony J. Brandenburg, Chief Judge of the Intertribal Court of Southern California, spoke about his work with the Intertribal Court. He explained how Tribal Court judges travel to each of the reservations to preside over cases based on the Tribe's laws, customs, and history.
Cheryl Weeks-Frey, SDCPLL's North County Branch Manager, was honored for contributing her time and for making the Law Library available for SDPA events over the past two years.

From the Director
by Robert R.
Renovation Negotiations
The Law Library will be busy throughout the summer with many activities. We continue negotiating with the County regarding the downtown Law Library renovation. Last week, the Law Library and its Board of Trustees met with Supervisor Greg Cox. We hope to hear back from Supervisor Cox in the next few weeks. At its next meeting, the Library Board will decide whether or not to commission more construction drawings and staff will consider potential contingency plans for working during renovations.
Main Branch Repairs
I'm happy to report that the air handler system at Main has been repaired. We are awaiting word from the County on plans for work on Main's sewer, ceiling and wall repairs. Discussions are also scheduled for this summer on the skylight replacement project at our East County branch.
Marketing Committee
Our new Marketing Committee met the first week in June, and Debra Baker of Legal Vertical Strategies has been chosen as our new marketing consultant. The Marketing Plan will be a major priority for the Library this coming fiscal year.
2010 Witkin Dinner
The Law Library Justice Foundation (LLJF) Events Committee is already hard at work finalizing names for the March 2010 Witkin Award nominees. We are hoping to shorten the selection process, while still choosing interesting and well deserving candidates. The new Witkin website will also make it easier to register online. The event will again be held at the Sheraton Harborside due to such positive feedback from last year's attendees. Stay tuned for further information.
Tuition Reimbursement Program
This year, the LLJF has contributed to a one-time tuition reimbursement program for our staff who are attending or wish to attend an accredited Masters level Library Degree program, while still working full time for the Law Library.
