Get
Out the Vote
The San
Diego County Public Law Library
is proud to join the nation in

We do not intend to advocate for
any particular candidate, political
party, or ballot initiative. Our
hope is to help raise awareness
of the importance of taking part
in the democratic process and

with your family, friends, and
co-workers.

New
Resource & Materials Added to
the Collection
This month's featured resource:
The
Law of Electronic Signatures
by Jeremiah S. Buckley et al.
In many industries, applications
completed by paper and pen are
perceived as outdated as the rotary
phone. Electronic signatures and
records legislation has revolutionized
the way business is conducted.
The Electronic Signatures and
National Commerce Act and the
Uniform Electronics Transactions
Act, which confer on electronic
records and signatures the same
status as paper records and ink
signatures, were adopted in 2000.
The passage of these Acts has
empowered parties to do business
electronically giving them confidence
that their contracts are legally
enforceable.
With disputes about these two
statutes appearing in the courts
this book is helpful because it
explains the terms used in the
two acts and the way the drafters
intended them to be interpreted.
This resource is currently only
available at the Main library
location and can be found on their
"New Book" table.

THINK
ABOUT IT
There is an entire industry devoted
to the mechanics of change, and
how people can and should react
to it in business, at work, in
relationships, and their daily
lives. Oprah talks about it -
new "how to" books on best strategies
for handling change are bestsellers
- and there are change "coaches"
who help guide us through the
tough spots.
Talk about job security! Change
doesn't quit. We don't take a
breath without changing the dynamics
of our own biological makeup.
Each new day brings a change to
the concept of who we are, what
the world is, and how we react
or interact. If we don't change,
we don't survive. Do we have any
choice in the matter?
What is changing here at the Law
Library? In my first month on
the job I have spent time listening
and learning about how things
were, and how things have been
done. Now for the fun part - what
can be changed to make things
better?
- Renovation:
The downtown library is all
set for a major facelift and
renewal. The building will
be vacated and shut down for
several months while it is
torn apart and re-wired and
re-modeled. This means relocating
vast amounts of books, shelves,
equipment, furniture, and
staff. Where will we go, and
for how long?
- Reconnection:
The downtown renovation gives
us the chance to bring new
focus and involvement to our
branches and their communities,
creating stronger partnerships
and new loyalties.
- Reinforcement:
We are taking a hard look
at our core truths and goals,
and setting new directions
for getting the job done in
ways that bring excitement
to the legal community and
the public.
- Reinvention:
The entire SDCPLL brand is
due for an overhaul. Look
at our logo. What does it
mean to you? It should make
a bold and clear statement,
something that is immediately
apparent to the viewer. We
want to make that happen in
inspiring and surprising ways.
Join me and the County Law Library
team in embracing change in our
daily operations, our forward
movement, and our future. Please
contact me with your ideas for
change at ideas@sdcpll.org.
John Adkins, Director
of Libraries
We shape clay into a pot,
but it is the empty space within
that holds whatever we want.
